Great food culture starts at home – especially when it’s from the chef’s home kitchen and garden! Be inspired by this unique and visually stunning book, which takes a behind-the-scenes look into the home kitchens (and gardens) of 22 of Australia’s celebrity chefs. Notable mentions include Frank Camorra (MoVida), Brigitte Hafner (Graceburn House & Tedesca Osteria in Red Hill, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula), Tony Niccolini (Italian Artisans), Scott Pickett (Estelle, Matilda, and Audrey’s in Sorrento), and of course many others. Each chef is interviewed by renowned architecture and design writer Stephen Crafti, and each profile is captured through gorgeous, intimate imagery by celebrated photographer Catherine Sutherland. Featuring fabulous, inspiring conversations with each chef in their personal living spaces, while they are preparing a meal in their stunning kitchen, and with a close look at their kitchen’s architectural design, and garden style, this book celebrates not only some of Australia’s finest chefs, but also the architects who make these chef’s kitchens a pleasure to work in. The chefs and architects answer important questions, such as what makes a great kitchen as much as a great meal; what makes these kitchens unique; what are some of the less obvious things that need to be addressed in a kitchen design; what is the range of fresh produce, ie herbs and spices, as well as vegetables that is best planted in a successful kitchen garden; and so much more. This beautifully illustrated book is filled with inspiration for foodies (included are recipes from the chefs), gardeners and design aficionados, and a peek into the secret lives of these celebrities.

How do artists produce exquisite art? Part of the answer is that each one must discover and create their own particular working space, harnessing inspiration from their surrounds, be it from the humble backyard shed, a beautifully refurbished industrial space, a room inside the home, a loft, or an architecturally designed house/studio set on a cliff, overlooking the natural beauty of the landscape. Some artistic souls thrive in seeming chaos while others must have an ordered studio space about them. In each instance, the role of the “studio” plays an important part in stimulating the artistic process.

This book offers an intriguing and exhilarating peek into the often secretive and off-limits creative spaces of thirty artists and practitioners. Whether it be for photography, music, sculpting, painting, architecture, writing, film, or furniture making, this selection of highly illustrated case studies from around the world reveals how these artisans and practitioners have crafted and designed their unique working environment. This beautiful collection of works also provides practical advice and innovative ideas on the architecture, interior design, site, and setting of workspaces that help these artists flourish through their creative journey.

Contemporary architecture is often characterised by the total interpenetration of interior and exterior configurations: the differentiation between these two dialectical poles has become indistinguishable, boundaries blurry and the result of any design process is a hybrid product, based on the superposition of different and heterogeneous layers. The impossibility of separating interior and exterior permits a general reorganisation of some topics internal to the territory of architecture, and also expresses the necessity of a systemic analysis of the most recent episodes. If at first glance this interest for a new kind of dialectics may appear as the most evident epiphenomenon of a wider and recent tendency, under careful examination one can observe that the tension between interior and exterior has always been present in architecture, differently articulated over the centuries, and expressed through several means of representation.

Starting from the 18th century, Interior Landscapes will describe the nature of such a relation, in order to unveil those invariant forms, principles or concepts that crossed the History of Architecture, laid hidden underneath the events flowing, and periodically re-emerged to shape contemporary episodes. Separation, inversion, interpenetration, dissolution – all of these categories periodically characterise the interior-exterior dialectics. By borrowing different interpretative elements – drawings, photographs, illustrations – Interior Landscapes is configured as a visual atlas, aimed to demonstrate how, through the contamination of interior and exterior, always-new architectural insights emerge.

A black home commands attention. Black adds drama, sophistication, and edginess to residential architecture. In Modern Houses in Black, Susan Redman explores the trend in black home design through a curated collection of twenty-eight residential properties across the world.

Illustrated with striking images of houses sited in either urban settings or remote rural landscapes, the book features these bespoke residences confidently displaying their dark exteriors, making a bold statement wherever they are located.

By including interviews with architects who explain their design choices for structure and materiality, from black-stained or burnt wood and metal cladding to black glazed brickwork and tinted concrete, Redman provides insights for current developments in the trend.

The homes featured will appeal to lovers of distinctive design, particularly to those who appreciate both the elegance and daring that black offers modern residential architecture.

Australia and the Australian landscape conjure up images of golden sand beaches with blue water and white-tipped waves, red, rocky expanses punctuated with the ghostly trunks of gum trees, blue-green tree-filled mountains, or misty rain forest canopies. Evocative, achingly beautiful, fragile, terrible in its splendour: Australia is much more than just the sun burnt country of Dorothy McKellar fame. Lisa Michele Burns expertly frames its splendour in her stunning photographs, delighting in seeing and capturing the patterns hidden within landscapes. An award-winning photographer, Burns seeks to document the fragility of the environment both above and below the surface. She is inspired by the details of nature and strongly believes that photography is as much about seeing and learning as it is capturing, taking the time to research each location, its history and formation. Burns’ ability to capture the soft hues and vibrant tones of Australia’s many colour palettes makes this collection something to marvel at.

Based in a historically distinguished town near New York City, the firm of Bentel & Bentel Architects has been led for over 50 years by two generations – men and women – of one family. The interweaving of their experiences, lifestyles, and personal philosophies has produced a uniquely elegant series of works including public buildings, restaurants, and hotels. The buildings are equally notable for their thoughtful relationships to the structures they occupy or adjoin, the communities in which they stand, and the experiences of their intended users. Bentel & Bentel’s accomplishments reflect not only its cumulative design experience but the insights the partners bring to their work from a variety of related activities: painting, sculpture, dance, design of furnishings, architectural history, and education. Reflecting the lives and accomplishments of the firm’s partners, this monograph is composed of three narratives: Who We Are, What We Do, and Who We Were.

This beautifully illustrated monograph showcases gorgeous examples of landscape architectural design—terrain + open space—by award-winning studio TROP. Established in 2007, TROP has worked on various projects throughout Asia, including Thailand, Singapore, and China.

Led by Pok Kobkongsanti, its philosophy is to create a unique design for each project that TROP works on. TROP believes that the design process is as important as the design itself, and strives to work very closely with each of its clients. TROP works include hospitality, residential, and commercial.

Packed with insights into the challenges and thought behind the creation of harmonious compositions, the narrative also provides a space for reflection by the studio on its many award-winning designs. TROP’s thoughtful designs succeed in creating a balance between nature, taking into consideration rainwater runoff in tropical areas, and the need to preserve greenery in large cities for the wildlife and beneficial cooling for city residents, resulting in true sustainable design.

Architecture China is a journal focusing on the leading architectural design projects with regional characteristic in contemporary China. This 2022 Fall issue of Architecture China, focusing on how a new culture could be constructed through the action of building, showcases 12 newly completed museums or galleries, all of which express certain characters in contemporary Chinese culture. Four essays by Li Xiangning, Stanislaus Fung, Aric Chen, Jiang Jiawei respectively provide different viewpoints on the topic, and expose critical thinking on cultural events that relate to contemporary China.

Robert Konieczny, founder and principal of KWK Promes, in Poland, specialises in projects renowned for ingenious concepts and unique design. His works examine closely the nature and interpretations of spatial journeys for the viewer or those who inhabit the space, be it for residential works, public buildings, or international cultural festivals and exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale. The firm’s work especially with kinetic architecture fuses seamless design principles with inventive concepts, namely movable structures that both catch light and create a uniquely experiential environment. A leader in industry innovation, Konieczny and KWK Promes was awarded the World Architecture Festival Award for the best building in 2016.

“Our designs are shaped by logic. Inside these pages we showcase a unique and detailed précis that narrates the story of the concepts behind our buildings.” — Robert Konieczny
“The ideas expressed by Robert Konieczny are quite radical and surprising—his forms are unexpected, and often closed or heavy at first sight. Though the Polish context, in terms of climate, history, and sociology may imply such solutions, KWK has laid out a series of concepts that could readily be applied to other places, surely generating other types of buildings. This is not a style so much as it is an intellectual construct.” — Philip Jodidio

What happens when an architect sets out to design the extraordinary, and by doing so challenges the established norms of the industry? A riot of inventive and ingenious residential structures to delight the eye and gladden the soul. This book decodes a wide selection of stunning experimental designs. By shaking off any limitations and seeking to challenge established design conventions, and using architectural ingenuity and modern technical aspiration, these carefully selected architects show how they develop bold and striking designs that will serve as inspiration for years to come, creating home designs that are both out of left field and can take residential ingenuity to the next level.

This edition is lavishly illustrated with crisp and evocative full-colour images of the architecture, with insight from the architect detailing their inspiration and the challenges encountered through the designing and building processes. Whether it be a uniquely challenging location, the decision to use materials in innovative ways, or simply experimenting with a new design shape, the works featured within these pages challenge the everyday notions of what a residence should be.

Through these pages, the reader is drawn into a beautiful journey through a diverse range of truly beautiful homes as imagined—and realised—by some of the best architectural visionaries of our time.

This beautifully appointed monograph features stunning full-colour photographs and richly detailed plans and diagrams showcasing the work of Spanish architect Luis Vidal and his studio, Luis Vidal + Architects. Renowned writer and international architecture expert Philip Jodidio provides valuable insights into the work of Vidal and eloquently narrates the stories of 14 distinctive projects across a wide international region.

The projects in the stunning volume, ranging from private residences and urban buildings to hospitals, airports, and educational and cultural centres, have become a world reference in architecture, design, and construction. Among the selected works are the award-winning Terminal 2 (The Queen’s Terminal) at Heathrow Airport in London, Matta Sur Community Center in Santiago de Chile, and Loyola University Campus in Seville. The monograph also features an intensely personal endeavour for Vidal—a private residence that encapsulates much of the thinking that has made Vidal’s work so successful across the world.

This monograph, the firm’s third publication in book form, covers 35 projects — the majority not previously published in book form — in a range of building and problem types. Projects like the Hillel Student Center in Washington, D.C. and the Transit Terminal in Galveston, Texas on the historic Strand span the range in public work. Frank’s International and Seismic Exchange explore the possibilities of corporate architecture to create place as much as to make a statement. Arabella transforms the repetitiveness in the condominium building type to variety in all living units, while the Thompson Hotel & Arts Residences along the River Walk in San Antonio navigates pedestrian scale in a twenty-story tower. POST covers the commitment to resiliency and the future of the planet while MEDDNet™ transforms urban design tactics into a national-scale disaster relief strategy.

The introduction is written by journalist Stephen Sharpe who has covered the firm’s work for nearly 20 years. An extended essay by Brown situates the firm’s position at the conversational threshold of scepticism about “Starchitecure” and the reality of everyday architecture, or “Marketecture”, while an intimate interview by architecture professor and author Donna Kacmar, FAIA gives insight into the details behind the firm as practice and the work itself.

Architecture Asia, as the official journal of the Architects Regional Council Asia, aims to provide a forum not only for presenting Asian phenomena and their characteristics to the world, but also for understanding diversity and multiculturalism within Asia from a global perspective.
This issue reveals the development of Thailand contemporary architecture, and features five essays and twelve projects that elaborate this perspective. The five essays elaborate the contemporary architecture of Thailand in Southeast Asia, and how Thailand architecture was influenced by western architectural theories and finally found a good balance between modernisation and localisation. The twelve projects, accompanied with full-colour photos and text descriptions, concentrate on the exploration of modernity, regionalism and futurism in Thai architecture from 1940 to 1980, and highlight architectural works that reflect on practical industrial buildings, demonstrate the exploration of Thai contemporary architecture from form, space and architecture to the complex disciplines of ecology, humanities, society and industry.

Hibino Sekkei has worked on over 560 design projects in Japan as well as overseas; they include kindergartens and nursery schools, primary and secondary schools, and other spaces where children spend long periods of time at. They think of a space as more than a space. They value all the “contents” in the container called space as significant as the container itself. This book is a collection of selected prominent works by Hibino Sekkei Youji no Shiro and KIDS DESIGN LABO, beginning from spaces to key design elements, furniture design, and visual identity design. The book aims to share Hibino Sekkei’s design concepts in the hope that they inspire the readers in crafting their own unique designs for children’s facilities. What’s more, they have interviewed several of the principles of the kindergartens and nurseries, who would provide valuable information on children’s spaces design from an educator’s point of view.

Focusing on the leading architectural designs with regional characteristics, Architecture China is a journal whose mission is to disseminate the creative works of contemporary Chinese architecture and deepen an appreciation of Chinese architectural traditions and trends. This issue, Architecture and Media will focus on the role that mass media and social media have played in contemporary Chinese architecture and how architects actively engage media as an architectural strategy. With case studies on the Aranya Resort and the TV show Dream Home, the issue develops a reading of these projects from a social perspective and discusses how architecture could better act as an agent of change. The issue also includes two recent projects.

“Beauty is the quality or qualities that give pleasure to the senses or mind. These qualities are both tangible and intangible, creating a visual and perceptual experience that stirs an emotional response. This collection of work showcases beauty in architecture and design. We are on a continual exploration of how to make beautiful buildings, spaces, and objects, always developing our knowledge and experience of what is beautiful, as it is manifested and perceived in different ways.

While some architects work in one style, continuously refining and perfecting it, I love to explore different styles and to learn, discover, and evolve. I grew up in America and have travelled, lived, and studied around the world. Now in Indonesia for more than thirty years, I bring this broad understanding and perspective to our work, while always being inspired by and embracing Indonesian culture, tradition, and the sharing of ideas. It’s this fusion and approach that sets my work apart.

The words you’ve encountered in this book are some of the ways in which we manifest beauty in our work. These words reflect both the physical and sensorial qualities in a design. Sometimes you see them, such as the materiality, palette, and light. Sometimes you feel them, such as anticipation and transitions. These qualities are all highly considered and carefully layered to create residential, commercial, and hospitality spaces that we characterise as “comfort luxury” and that have a positive emotional affect. They are spaces for people to feel at home; oases to enjoy after a long day.

Crafting the spaces comes from thoughtful consideration of the journey through a house, and what people will see and feel as they transition from space to space – from public to private, from collective spaces to sanctuaries.” – Thomas Elliott (from the Afterword)

New Orleans, like Venice, is built in a location that at first sight seems curious in the extreme. How could it be that these cities, built so precariously in the face of a watery threat, were to become among the great cities of the world? How could a site below sea level, at a swampy curve in the River Mississippi become one of the most visited cities in the United States, and possess a unique kind of magic that separates it from other cities?

Geoffrey H. Baker’s gem of an architectural guide answers these burning questions. Inside these richly illustrated pages he explains how the urban design works for this city’s plight, which is frequently handicapped by nature’s capacity to destroy in the form of hurricanes. Timothy’s beautiful photography showcases the unique topography and architectural fabric of New Orleans, and Geoffrey’s insight illuminates the city’s inimitable spirit that’s born of its constant battle for survival.

Architectural exhibition is an important aspect in the study and transmission of architectural culture. The academic thoughts and design styles that influence the trends of global architecture are all established through one or a series of important architectural exhibitions. This book is produced based on the GSD (Harvard Graduate School of Design) autumn exhibition: ‘Towards a Critical Pragmatism: Contemporary Chinese Architecture’. It reveals a unique perspective of contemporary Chinese architecture by showcasing 60 works from 60 contemporary architects within five thematic categories: cultural, residential, regeneration, rural, and digital.

The selected architects attempt to maintain, from the earliest moments of the design process to its finished outcome, a certain level of critical thinking and quality. It is a record of the continuous evolution and growth of contemporary Chinese architecture and hopes to open up a new avenue from which to encourage further conversation regarding both the present and future state of China’s architecture culture.
