  • The National Museum of Australia (NMA) had been a long time coming: the idea can be traced back to the time of Federation in 1901.

It was fitting, then, that the NMA became the Commonwealth's flagship project for the Centenary of Federation celebrations in 2001. The project originated with an international design competition which the architects, Ashton Raggatt McDougall and Robert Peck von Hartel Trethowan, won in 1997.

This inspirational monograph looks at three aspects of the NMA complex: the architecture of the National Museum of Australia and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies buildings, the landscape, and the exhibitions held in the National Museum.

Contributors to the book include: Dimity Reed, Dawn Casey, Ian Perlman, Ross Jenner, W. Scott Guerin and Leon Paroissien, Charles Jencks and Deyan Sudjic. It also features photography by John Gollings and graphics by Vivid, one of Australia's new, cutting-edge graphic design studios.
